New Mexico Birds: Strigiformes (Owls)

Just three owl species on this page, since I'm asleep when most of them are hunting. Hover over the photo series to control the images.

Strigidae: Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia)

I have lived in the Southwest, mostly, since 1969, and I didn't see my first burrowing owls until 2024.  Here are the only half-decent pictures I got of them.

Strigidae: Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus)

Strigidae: Northern Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium gnoma)

In the words of the birder who pointed out this owl to me, as my friends and I were rambling past, this owl is the side "of a Coke can."
