New Mexico Wildflowers: Fig-Marigold Family

(Aizoaceae)

Western Sea-Purslane (Sesuvium verrucosum)

This species features mats or low mounds of growth with succulent leaves and small, easily overlooked flowers. It tolerates saline or alkali soils, and in the Albuquerque area I found it in a poorly drained area extending from the city's South Valley onto the north end of Isleta Pueblo.  Within New Mexico you're more likely to find it along the lowermost Rio Grande and Pecos Rivers.
