New Mexico Wildflowers: Dayflower Family

Flowers are organized alphabetically by genus and species. Hover over a photo series to control the images.

Bird-Bill Dayflower (Commelina dianthifolia)

Look for tiny blue flowers with three petals, and narrow pointed leaves. In one picture I'm grasping the plant carefully with my left thumb and forefinger, providing a sense of scale. I'm also grasping the spathe (leaf-like bract). You can see that feature clearly in a September 2024 picture.

Red-Whisker Clammyweed (Polanisia dodecandra)

Western Spiderwort (Tradescantia occidentalis)

Western spiderworts are low-lying plants with three large purple petals. Dayflowers are similar (they're in the same family), so be careful not to confuse the two.  One thing to look for is the western spiderwort's hairy stamens.
